W. Stephen Cooper, a Toronto native, received his initial training in photography at Humber College. His photographs are regularly displayed in publications, art exhibitions and galleries, and in private and corporate collections.

Steve’s photographs are studies in the subtle play of light as it moves across the surface of deserts, canyons and other wilderness areas. The resulting images are an exploration of the textures and patterns which exist in nature. The art and architecture of prehistoric cultures are also the theme of many of his studies. He has turned his lens toward more recent relics, as well: abandoned machinery and automobiles, preserved by the clean, dry environment of arid regions, revealing their own unique patterns in the clear desert light.

Steve is well-known for portraying his subjects in black and white: detailed images with a wide tonal range created in the darkroom. Currently, he is also creating images utilizing contemporary photographic techniques, and then printing them on archival canvas, metal or resin, in limited editions. His studies of abandoned vehicles metamorphosing into art through the ravages of time and weather are good examples of this.
